One of the biggest and best attractions to visit on Oahu is the Honolulu Zoo. It is located at 151 Kapahulu Avenue, is a total of 42 acres and features over 1200 animals. The pink flamingos are one of the main draws. More than half a million people visit this zoo each year while on vacation in the great city of Honolulu, Hawaii.
Do you plan on staying at Waikiki Beach? If so, then you’re right in the vicinity of where the zoo is located. You have easy access to this major attraction that is just a short walk from the beach. Expect to spend a couple of hours seeing all the exhibits. There is plenty of shade available throughout the zoo grounds.
Aside from the hippos, lions, giraffes and all the other usual animals you expect to see at a zoo, there are some pleasant surprises, like the pink flamingoes. Two other favorites at the zoo are the African Hunting Dog and the Fennec Fox. Additionally, you’re going to see quite a few animals that are native to the area and the rest of the Hawaiian islands.
There are benches and a playground area for the kids. Of course, the kids are going to have a great time walking around and seeing all the animals. What kid is going to refuse a playground though? Furthermore, while the zoo is small, it is spread out and the summers get quite hot in Honolulu. Therefore, the benches and shaded areas make for nice pitstops.
You might also want to stop by the cafe for a bite to eat and something to drink. And you know you’re going to have to take the family over to the gift shop for souvenirs. One of the animals at the zoo isn’t kept in a closed-off habitat. Don’t worry, it’s not the lions. It’s peacocks. The magnificent birds roam freely throughout the zoo.
It’s great that the Honolulu Zoo is so close to Waikiki beach. And not only do you get to see the animals, but there are certain feeding times as well. You might want to check the posted feeding times so that you can take part. They tend to be in the afternoon for most of the animals. Yet it is also suggested that you show up at the zoo during the morning time. The animals are more frisky and out and about before the afternoon heat hits.
Have you ever seen Galapagos Tortoises? They are massive! The kids will enjoy the children’s zoo area, too. Not only are you near the beach, but you are in the heart of Oahu, HI. The grounds are beautiful, and the enclosures are spacious.
There are also sculptures and other art on display at the zoo. When you’re traveling the capital city, this major attraction is one you don’t want to miss. The Honolulu Zoo is quite unique and makes for a great family adventure. There are also special events held there throughout the year, like Christmas With The Animals.
